The Shakespeare Schools' Championship is a unique drama competition being staged across Jamaica to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. Shakespeare, who is widely regarded as the world’s pre-eminent dramatist, often features as compulsory reading for students sitting English Literature examinations the world over.

The championship is being organized by Generating Genius, a UK based charity organization with a clear mission to make the Arts and Sciences accessible to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. One key planks of the charity’s mission is to give young people access to Shakespeare plays.

The aim of the project is to find a new and inspiringly original productions of Shakespeare’s plays and is geared towards students in the 10th grade/4th form who have just commenced preparation for the CXC/CSEC syllabus (but is open to all secondary school students at the discretion of their respective teachers and trainers).

The school with the winning production will receive:

  • An all expenses paid trip to London for up to12 people (a cast of 10 students PLUS 2 teachers)
  • The Championship trophy
  • Individual medals
  • Best actress and Best actor awards


The runner–up (2nd place) will receive:

  • A cash donation to the Drama Department of the school
  • Second place certificates
